About Smile Without the Chair
Not everyone flinches at the smell of a dental office. If you do, if you've ever rescheduled an appointment twice and then quietly let the third one lapse, this site was built with you in mind.
It started with an email, actually, one I still think about. A reader named Wren wrote in after reading a post I'd written about ten years of avoiding the dentist, mentioning she'd personally gone almost fifteen without an appointment and had never said that number out loud before. That message is still, figuratively, taped above the desk where every review on this site gets written.
Every review here answers a narrower question than most dental content bothers with: does this actually help someone whose hands shake a little at the thought of a cleaning, and does it buy real time between appointments or just feel like it does. An abscess or a cracked molar still needs an actual dentist. No product on a shelf changes that, and anything reviewed here that claims otherwise gets called out for it.
Plenty of things get tested here and quietly dropped. A gadget that promised too much and delivered too little still gets written up honestly instead of buried, because someone reading this while anxious about their own teeth deserves the version that includes the failures.
I'm Mia Torres, a freelance designer in Denver, and I've managed a real fear of dental visits for most of my adult life. I test everything here myself before it gets recommended to anyone else.
The longer version of how I got here lives on the author page.
Quick disclosure: some of the links on this site earn me a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Only products I've actually tried end up recommended here. Full details are in the privacy policy.
